I’m retiring from the forums for the near future

In March 2005, I had no idea that I would be a full-time Linux user. I had no idea I would be a regular member (God forbid a moderator) of a Linux forum. I had no idea part of my Psychocats website would be dedicated to Linux tutorials.

Now it’s June 2007, and I already feel (two years later) that it’s time to retire from the Ubuntu Forums. I’ve put in two short terms as a forum moderator. I’ve posted 25,000 posts. I’ve tried my best to help new users and to provide realistic (not exaggerated) advocacy and PR for Ubuntu.

I’ve encountered wonderful human beings—intelligent and giving human beings who live up to and beyond the Ubuntu motto of “Humanity toward others.” That community’s giving spirit and openness is inspiring. Nevertheless, it’s a chapter I’m closing right now.

I’ll still keep using Ubuntu. I’ll still upkeep Psychocats. I’ll keep blogging. But I’m on indefinite break from the forums.

  1. I just arrived on your website following a link from ubuntuforums, figured I would come to check out who it is that has provided me with so many solutions to my problems. So, thank you for your contribution. Enjoy your retirement :o)

  2. Well, I haven’t hit the forums as much I would’ve liked lately, but you’ll be missed. I’ll keep up on your latests posts here though, to see the latest news in psychocats’ world. :)

  3. I know some people will miss me, but the forums will go on, and so will I. I’ll probably come back eventually, too. I just need a break.

  4. Everyone needs a break from time to time, you have invested quite a lot of time and effort helping out Ubuntu users, including myself. So just wanted to say thank you and I hope you will not be gone from the forums for long.

    Regards.

  5. Thanks, Jereme. Even though I disagree with you about the name Ubuntu Christian Edition, I very much admire your efforts and your patience with the naysayers.

  6. Sorry to hear this – I am a fairly new user to Ubuntu and I have used your site and many of your posts were very helpful. Thank yo u very much and I hope after a break you will return to the forums.

  7. Whoh! We were just asking about you. You performed a great task while moderator at the Forums. You will be missed. If ever in Fort Worth, look me up. A private IM an the Ubuntu forums will get to me and I will send private info if you ever want to visit.

    Take care wise one.

  8. I just wanted to Thank You for all that you have done.

Thank You! I do appreciate all that you have done and the time you sacrificed for the community. From one who has retired from the ubuntuforums.org staff position and also taken a break from the forums, I understand and support you completely sometimes a break from ubuntuforums.org and the politics is greatly needed. Please make the most of your time and spend valuable time with loved ones. They are the ones who need you the most.

Best of all to you, I look forward to your return,

    Jozef (aka RAV TUX)

  9. Can you tell us what you’ll be doing during the break? I wonder what about Ubuntuforums.org keeps you from leading your life as you would normally.

  10. Oh man, you’ll be missed. But after all the time you gave to the forums and all your posts I’m not surprised that you need a break. Good luck with everything and thanks for all the how-tos.

  11. I know you won’t take this the wrong way, so I’ll feel free to say it: I’m happy to hear that you’re leaving for a while. I generally don’t find statements like “I’m happy in your name” sincere, but that was my instant reaction.

I’ve suffered from “forum burnout” multiple times, and I feel your departure has something to do with some form of that. If I’m not wrong, it will be a beneficial break for all sides.

People will perhaps get a taste of what [Ubuntu Forums minus aysiu] is like, and some will try to make up for your absence. You’ll be “there with your absence”. You’ve been a huge influence and no less than an educator (in a sense stripped from all the usual negative load of that word) for tens of thousands. Enjoy the break!

  12. I will miss your knowledge greatly. I used a couple of your how-tos and tutorials(lotsa minimalistic installs, especially the icewm one). Thanks for your contributions and good luck in your future. =]

  13. I’m sorry to see you go. I don’t blame you, though. While the forums are a great resource, it seems like they can be addictive and suck the life out of you.

    Get some rest.

  14. Thanks to all for the well-wishing and encouragement. I just felt I needed a break.

What have I been doing with all my extra time? Well, I’ve been writing, thinking, playing more guitar, joining my wife more on her video game adventures… what I usually do, but just more of it.

I will probably be participating in the Ubuntu Forums again in the future. In the meantime, I may drop by from time to time just to see (without participating) how things are going.

  15. Cool. Enjoy your time away from the screen. Ubuntu’s so easy to use that people will get by anyway, right?

  16. Sorry to hear you are leaving us, but hey, you did some sterling work, and will be missed an awful lot inside the forums.

However, we know how to keep a track of things now, so all the best of luck for the future, whatever you decide to do.

  17. Have fun :)

People will be linking to your “anatomy of a well intentioned linux troll” article for a long long time to come. And not to forget the many many other ones.

  18. Hello Aysiu,

Sad to hear you are leaving. Really. One question though… Will you still be using Ubuntu? If so you will be back sooner or later. :-)
