If the CD doesn&#8217;t boot, you may have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiren.info\/pages\/bios-boot-cdrom\">enable the BIOS to boot from CD<\/a>. There&#8217;s usually a key you can press during boot-up to bring up a boot menu and choose to boot from CD. The key itself varies from computer to computer. On some computers, the key is Delete. On others, it&#8217;s F2 or F9. On still others, it&#8217;s Escape. <\/p>\n<p> <b>Starting the live session<\/b><br \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb01.png\" width=\"253\" height=\"188\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> The first thing the live CD will ask you is what language you want to use. Select <i>English<\/i> or whatever language you think is most appropriate. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb02.png\" width=\"251\" height=\"190\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> From the boot menu, select <i>Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer<\/i> and hit Enter. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb03.png\" width=\"250\" height=\"185\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> Wait for Ubuntu to load up. This could take several minutes. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb15.png\" width=\"158\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> Click on the <i>Places<\/i> menu and select your hard drive. It won&#8217;t be called C: or D:. It&#8217;ll likely be labeled by the size of the drive. In this screenshot, my Windows drive is 8.7 GB, so I&#8217;m going to click on that in order to make it accessible (since the live CD won&#8217;t affect the hard drive unless I explicitly ask it to). <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb16.png\" width=\"319\" height=\"220\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> You should be able to see the Windows drive as an icon on the desktop now. Double-click that icon to open it (just as you would double-click on <i>My Computer<\/i> in Windows). Then go to <i>Documents and Settings<\/i> (Windows XP) or <i>Users<\/i> (Windows 7). <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery17.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb17.png\" width=\"258\" height=\"152\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> Double-click on the username of the user you want to recover files from. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery18.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb18.png\" width=\"262\" height=\"160\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> Then find the folder you want the files from. In this example, I&#8217;m going to <i>My Documents<\/i><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery19.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb19.png\" width=\"248\" height=\"151\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> If you need to go to a subfolder like <i>My Pictures<\/i>, double-click on that folder as well. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecovery20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/windowsfilerecoverythumb20.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"162\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/> Once you find the files you want to recover, you can copy and paste them to an external drive or even email them to yourself (for most wired broadband connections, Ubuntu will automatically set up a working internet connection). <\/p>\n<p> <b>Notes<\/b><br \/> Yes, you may be shocked that anyone can boot a live CD and access your files, but it&#8217;s true. Better you know now and get rid of that false sense of security you used to have.
