{"id":279,"date":"2008-06-09T17:13:22","date_gmt":"2008-06-09T17:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ubuntucat.wordpress.com\/?p=278"},"modified":"2008-06-09T17:13:22","modified_gmt":"2008-06-09T17:13:22","slug":"how-to-use-konqueror-or-kate-as-sudo-in-kubuntu-kde-4-remix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/ubuntucat\/how-to-use-konqueror-or-kate-as-sudo-in-kubuntu-kde-4-remix\/","title":{"rendered":"How to use Konqueror or Kate as sudo in Kubuntu KDE 4 Remix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I hope I&#8217;ve made apparent in these two links below, the proper way to launch a file browser as root in KDE is <i>kdesu konqueror<\/i>: <br \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/ubuntu\/permissions\">www.psychocats.net\/ubuntu\/permissions<\/a> <br \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/ubuntu\/graphicalsudo\">www.psychocats.net\/ubuntu\/graphicalsudo<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\nUnfortunately, in the KDE 4 version of Kubuntu 8.04, if you try to launch Konqueror (the file browser) or Kate (the text editor) with root (or administrative) permissions, you won&#8217;t be able to. <\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudo01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudothumb01.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\"><\/a><br \/> If you try <i>kdesu konqueror<\/i>, you&#8217;ll be told the command is not found. <\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudo02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudothumb02.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"300\" height=\"114\"><\/a> <br \/> So you&#8217;ll have to run the command with the explicit path to the executable:<br \/> <i>kdesu \/usr\/lib\/kde4\/bin\/konqueror<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudo03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudothumb03.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"300\" height=\"132\"><\/a> <br \/> Likewise, the command <i>kdesu kate<\/i> will not be found. <\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudo04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.psychocats.net\/wpimages\/kde4sudothumb04.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\"><\/a> <br \/> So you&#8217;ll have to run the command<br \/> <i>kdesu \/usr\/lib\/kde4\/bin\/kate<\/i> <br \/> to have it launch successfully. <\/p>\n<p> By the way, I don&#8217;t know if there are any adverse side effects, but I believe you can restore the original functionality by symlinking the executables back to the normal path: <br \/> <i>sudo ln -s \/usr\/lib\/kde4\/bin\/kate \/usr\/bin\/kate<br \/>\nsudo ln -s \/usr\/lib\/kde4\/bin\/konqueror \/usr\/bin\/konqueror<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I hope I&#8217;ve made apparent in these two links below, the proper way to launch a file browser as root in KDE is kdesu konqueror: www.psychocats.net\/ubuntu\/permissions www.psychocats.net\/ubuntu\/graphicalsudo Unfortunately, in the KDE 4 version of Kubuntu 8.04, if you try to launch Konqueror (the file browser) or Kate (the text editor) with root (or administrative)&hellip;
