Not related to the above, but recently came across
"Ubuntu Linux Resources" so this is just a quick note to say "thank you" for the effort and time that you put into it's creation. i have just quickly skimmed it and have thus far found it to be extremely use full. Full of appreciation for your efforts and I will be back!" Thanks again. Leroy

In respect to "Idea #2560: Option to Propagate permissions of parent directory to new files", you may want to have a look at this

Hide might be the wrong word in this case.

I don't mean hide as in make it so the user is unable to find.

I actually mean hide as in don't force the user to scour and understand the entire filesystem hierarchy just to change the default application Firefox uses to open a download.

Actually in both OS X and Windows you can navigate the entire filesystem. I'm not talking about navigation here. I'm talking about integration. It doesn't make sense, if you're talking about what helper program Firefox should use, for Firefox to dump you into a file browser instead of a list of programs any more than it makes sense for the Applications menu to dump you into a file browser or for the System menu to dump you into a file browser.

This Firefox 'open with' issue is one that has driven me nuts in the past, but I use KDE and I always assumed it was a GNOME problem, not a Firefox one.

However
> Because there are still instances in which the
> filesystem hierarchy is not properly hidden from
> the end user...
I don't think the filesystem should *ever* be hidden from the end user. Windows has this, where its a confusing mess of links from Desktop to C:\ to Documents all while skipping over various folders within. OSX does something similar where Joe User never really leaves Documents. Although the user may not need to get to those other places on a general basis, hiding them is not the way to create an open computing environment where we hope that people understand what they do and how, unlike people of today's computing life. If we want to move forward we need the understanding of computers to move forward. I remember twenty+ years ago my mom teaching me how to format floppies; now she doesn't even know what a filesystem is. This is the wrong direction.

I agree with you with many of the ideas you mentioned. I'm just a regular user that wants Ubuntu to "just work". Ubuntu brainstorm is a great place where people can share their ideas, and there are excellent ones like those on your post, we only have to wait Canonical to implement them.

Wow, hey. I didn't even know about Ubuntu Brainstorm until Just Now. That's awesome. What a fun way to while away the day, I certainly have a few I could add.
