MelanieLynskey.netFilmography (with commentary)Claustrophobia (2003): Mark Tapio Kines wrote and directed Foreign Correspondents. This is his second project with Melanie. It's now called Serial Slayer Shattered Glass (2003): Great movie. Mel's great, even though her character keeps wearing the same outfit the whole movie. Abandon (2002): Bad movie. Sweet Home Alabama (2002): Melanie, please stay away from the fake Southern accents and the fake New Jersey accents. This movie was just a waste of film and talent. Sigh. Rose Red (2002): As with Detroit, I would not have seen this if Mel weren't in it. I'm not a Stephen King fan (my wife is, sort of) and I hate horror films. The good thing is that Melanie, although still in a supporting role, gets quite a few lines and even has slight romantic tension with another character. Snakeskin (2001): At this point it has not been released as a Region 1 DVD, so we poor Americans cannot be blessed with a third Lynskey starring role unless we have Showtime Extra. Her first two starring roles were rather weak characters (not storyline weak, just weak as in dependent or not strong-willed). Here we see her a little more headstrong. Coyote Ugly (2000): I saw this in the theaters with my wife. She was very excited by the idea of aneroxic women dancing scantily clad atop a bar in New York City. I was okay with it, but not terribly thrilled. Granted, Melanie's fake New Jersey accent was horrible, but it's not as if I could possibly fake a good Kiwi accent, either! Anyway, her face was a wonderful relief from having to look at Piper Perabo's ugly mug all film. Shooters (2000): Typical shoot-'em-up gangster-tries-to-go-straight buddy movie. Mel plays the wife wanting to "get out." Measureless to Man (1999): I have no idea what this movie is about or what Melanie's role in the film is. Isn't that convenient? Cherry Orchard, The (1999): I have never seen this film but I think it's supposed to be based on The Cherry Orchard? Apparently, she met her boyfriend while making this movie. I don't know if they're still dating, but... well, I'm married, anyway. Sorry, Mel. Hate to break your heart... Right! But I'm a Cheerleader (1999): A film my wife and I watched with delight and we both noticed the mysterious "her" in the middle of the movie. She looks great in glasses (as do most women), and added a funny, but necessary seriously comedic element to the film. Detroit Rock City (1999): Truthfully, if Melanie Lynskey were not in this film, I would have had no inclination to watch it. Four testosterone-driven boys want desperately to see a Kiss concert? No thanks! It turned out to be a delightful romp, and Melanie was her usual charming self. What fun. Foreign Correspondents (1999): Foreign Correspondents was a movie I got after I realized that the same actress I'd admired in so many movies was, in fact, one actress. After there had been enough "Oh, it's her" comments from both me and my wife, I decided to look her up. Who is "her," anyway? Once I found her out, I wanted desperately to find her in a leading role. So, I went to the forcor website, read about the movie, saw pictures, saw the trailer. I decided to rent the film. I looked everywhere, including Le Video (which is supposed to have one of the largest video rental collections in the U.S.), and no one had it. So, I went on faith and bought a copy at Amazon. I was not disappointed. Ever After (1998): When I saw Ever After for the first time, I noticed Melanie right away. Sure, Drew has been one of my favorites for a while, but when I saw Melanie, I immediately thought, "Boy, she's hot." It was weird, though. I didn't make the connection at all between her in Ever After and her in Heavenly Creatures--I admired them separately as if they were two different actresses. Frighteners, The (1996): Now, I didn't actually see this movie all the way through. I saw the beginning of it with D. Then, I fell asleep. Every now and then I drifted into consciousness, and one time when I did, I heard my wife murmur, "Oh, it's her," during the brief moment Melanie makes her appearance in the film. I'd just missed it (and it was on TV, so there was no rewind button). Oh well. Heavenly Creatures (1994): This is the first movie I ever saw her in. It was playing at my alma mater's film series. I went to see it alone because at that point I didn't have many friends. The movie itself was stunning, but more importantly Melanie was stunning. Hollywood noticed Kate Winslet (whom I didn't notice until Sense and Sensibility), but I noticed Ms. Lynskey right away. She was an intense, charming, and great actress.

Haven't been that diligent about updating. According to the IMDB, Mel has three things upcoming: Park, (in pre-production), Flags of Our Fathers (filming) and Say Uncle (to be released soon?)
Melanie Lynskey turns 28 today.
Mel will apparently be appearing in a new movie called Heart of Gold. Thanks to Nate for the news, and here's the link Nate mentioned.
There's now a short review of one of Melanie's recent films, The Nearly Unadventurous Life of Zoe Cadwaulder. Thanks to Nate from Yahoo! groups for pointing it out.
Happy 27th birthday, Melanie!
Apparently, Melanie will be in a new movie called Donut Hole.
The region-2 DVD of Heavenly Creatures will finally be available in August, 2004.
Passing mention in USA Today article about Men: "Charlie's romantic stalker Rose (Melanie Lynskey), originally a short-term character, is now a less crazy regular, and Conchata Ferrell joined the cast as housekeeper Berta."
A brief article about Men with a paragraph devoted to Melanie.
Not too much detailed information out about this yet, but apparently Melanie will be in a new movie entitled The Nearly Unadventurous Life of Zoe Cadwaulder. This link has a little blurb about it.
Melanie gets a brief mention in The New Zealand Herald in an article entitled "The Price of Child Fame": Susan Smith is the manager of New Zealand actress Melanie Lynskey, who starred in Heavenly Creatures aged just 15 and is only now winning regular, notable roles in films such as Coyote Ugly and Sweet Home Alabama. The youngest woman in Hollywood to open her own agency in 1969, she sighs and says "this community's made up of so many superficial arseholes. We've had to spend so much time battling jerkoids".[sic]
Unfortunately, as a supporting cast member, she doesn't appear very often, but Melanie's now on the CBS sit-com Two and a Half Men, starring Charlie Sheen and the guy who played Ducky in Pretty in Pink.
Snakeskin--as far as I know it's unavailable anywhere else in the U.S.--is currently on the Showtime Extra circuit. Go to sho.com for more information on air dates.
Melanie appears as Marcy in two episodes of Fox's The Shield: "Barnstormers" (episode # 2.7) and "Partners" (episode # 2.3).
