The Hunger

Buy at Amazon.comThis could be quite possibly the worst vampire movie ever made. The dialogue is meagerly sparsed but also uninspiring. There is no plot (plot involving some kind of cause and effect, not just a series of events). There is no coherent character development. And the director can't decide whether the film is an artsy, slow Ingmar Bergman-esque mood piece or a fast-paced Baz Luhrmann-esque music video. Early on, there is an intriguing promise of a storyline when you see an aging vampire (David Bowie) confront a scientist (Susan Sarandon) who studies sleep patterns, premature aging, and the relationship between the two. Nothing fruitful in the narrative comes from this interaction. Bowie's character soon disappears and is replaced by rampant (though not terribly explicit or titillating) lesbian making out between Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve. If you do choose to watch this, perhaps to see Sarandon and Deneuve going at it (as I'm sure many men will get a kick out of doing), make sure you have your thumb resting on the fast-forward button. --A.Y.
