Love and Pop

Buy at Amazon.com This is a weird, weird film. The cover's tagline is "Schoolgirls by day... Callgirls by night..." but the movie is not titillating, sensual, or even plain old objectifying of women. It's this surreal journey of one girl (yes, she has friends, but they are not a major part of the narrative) to make money by way of "subsidized dating" to buy a ring. The men she meets are strange--very, very strange. That's the most fascinating thing about this movie, really, just how strange the men are that she encounters--these perverted old men who lust after (or something after; sometimes it's not lust) skinny high school girls in uniform. The camera work is done by handheld digital cameras and have crazy perspectives (facing downward from the girl's crotch, on the girl's face as she's splashing water on it, etc.). You won't leave this movie the same, but you probably won't leave this movie entertained, either. It's just too weird. --A.Y.
