When I picked this up in the library, the back of the video cover made it seem as if the video were some critically acclaimed masterpiece of the 1970s. Plus, I was interested because Mr. Goodbar is the only Hershey's candy I like, really. The character study here has a lot of potential--a shy and seemingly borderline personality woman opens up sexually and becomes a teacher of deaf children by day and a drug and sex fiend by night. Really, though, the story goes nowhere, Diane Keaton and Richard Gere are miscast, and the violence toward the end of the film just doesn't make sense. The one redeeming moment in this film is the premature ejaculation scene with the professor near the beginning of the film... it offers a good laugh. The ending, however, will not put you in the mood for dinner... or even a Mr. Goodbar.
