Quentin Tarantino does it again--an original, addictive, and funny violent film. Although the overall plot itself (at least as it appears now) is trite (after a near-death beating, unnamed woman goes after the would-be assassins), the little moment-to-moment twists in the plot are refreshing. And even though the acting isn't impressive, some scenes are too drawn out, and the dialogue is not the usual Tarantino wit, there is something irresistibly satisfying about the movie--call it a mood, call it nostalgia. Tarantino obviously has nostalgia for kung fu flicks of the 1970s, but for me the nostalgia was mostly for his style of filmmaking (I loved
Reservoir Dogs and
Pulp Fiction). The coolest part, however, has to be the random anime that pops up in the film... and, to be honest, the "cliffhanger" at the end doesn't really leave you unsatisfied. I'm curious to find out what happens, but, as I wait for the second part to appear, I won't be losing any sleep.
