In the Realm of the Senses

Buy at Amazon.comOkay, it's debatable whether it's "pornography" or not. If you define pornography as sexually explicit material, well, this movie is just about as pornographic as you can get. If you define pornography as that which uses sex to debase or otherwise devalue women, I don't know that this does. Really, it's a novelty piece. The plot is rather thin--an ex-prostitute ends up as a servant in a rich household. She and the master have lots of rampant sex and eventually their S&M goes to far, she strangles him to death and castrates him, carrying his severed penis around for a few days after his death. The novelty is that the film is a rare blend of cinematic calm and seriousness with sexually explicit material. It has a very "art house" feel to it, yet you cannot deny the two people are having sex--you see the penetration. Curious? See it. Turned off by the idea of an art house movie with penetration and lots of other explicit acts? Don't see it. --A.Y.
