Frequently Asked Questions

Gabriel Byrne in The Usual Suspects What is Simple Film Reviews?
The goal of Simple Film Reviews is to provide short, to-the-point, honest reviews of films. The reviews are entirely biased and do not seek in any way to cater to everyone's tastes; however, you may find after a while that you can gauge your disliking or liking for a movie by what's written here.

What distinguishes Simple Film Reviews from other film reviews sites?
1. We never totally bash a movie, no matter how "bad" we think it is. Oh, we'll tell you it's bad, all right, but we'll always find at least one redeeming quality in the film, even if it's just the special effects or one piece of well-written dialogue.
2. We don't have some annoying database to sift through, unlike some sites that have a page with a bunch of letters of the alphabet as links and only a few movies per letter. All the films are on one page (in alphabetical order) so that you can just scroll down to find whatever it is you're looking for.
3. We also have links to other respectable film review sites.

Why don't you have a ratings system?
Many other film review sites give movies up to four or five stars, tomatoes, popcorn kernels, or whatever. We don't rate the films numerically because we want you to read our reviews. If you want to quantify how good a movie is, we recommend you go to Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, some movies, like When Harry Met Sally..., are unreservedly phenomenal; others, like Bounce, are arguably the worst movies of all time. Most of the films we review here, no matter how good or bad they are, have both merits and faults.

Do you give spoiler warnings?
No. In fact, we usually tell you very little about the actual plot of any movie because we believe that oftentimes the less you know about a film, the better your film-watching experience will be. So, we certainly don't give away the ending. What we do think we might give you (as opposed to a plot synopsis) is an idea of whether such-and-such a film is the kind of movie you may enjoy watching or renting.

How do you choose what movies to review?
Our selection of movies to review may seem quite random, and, to a certain degree, it is. We don't seek to be a comprehensive, monster review site. We both work full-time jobs and don't have time to write tens of thousands of reviews. Most of the reviews we do are of movies we see as we see them, whether they are rentals or on "the big screen." We do try, though, to put in a mix of titles that are classic and current, popular and obscure, and comic and serious.

Most of the reviews are by "A.Y." How come there aren't more "D.L." reviews?
D.L. writes great reviews, doesn't she? Unfortunately, she just doesn't feel like writing reviews, most of the time. Every now and then, though, her wonderful reviews will make an appearance.
