Charlotte Sometimes

Buy at Amazon.comThere's quite a funny story behind this, actually. First, my mom sends me an email begging me to see this on behalf of NAATA, to support Asian-Americans in film. Then, in the middle of X-Men 2 the film projection gets a little screwy. The theater, nice enough to reimburse their customers, after the film gives out free movie passes that can be used at any Regal Entertainment theater. So, the wife and I decide to see Charlotte Sometimes for free. Turns out--we realize as we're handed a program for the evening upon entering the theater--it's the premiere of the film, with cast and crew members Q&A session and after-party. The movie is slow, damn slow. The pacing is off. The acting is good--intense. Some of the dialogue is witty. The major ways in which this movie is hurting--there is no development of conflict and no resolution to the conflict. There's a big difference between "mysterious" and "confusing." The movie was just plain confusing and left way too many questions unanswered. Everyone else, besides my wife and I, loves the movie. White people love it because it's all mysterious and exotic. Asian people love it because there are actually Asian-Americans in the film. It's not good cinema, though. There is a twenty-minute segment in the film that is good--good pacing, refreshing dialogue, funny moments. The rest of the film is garbage. It shames me that the director, Eric Byler, is a Wesleyan alumnus. --A.Y.
