To be perfectly honest, I thought this would be some cheesy soft-core sex movie with 80s-sounding guitar riffs and a poor excuse for a plot. However, Sheryl Lee (of
Twin Peaks fame), Craig Sheffer (Hardy Jenns from
Some Kind of Wonderful), and Terence Stamp (in everything from
Modesty Blaise and
Superman II to
Wall Street and
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), present a very real-feeling problematic and touching marriage and subsequent therapy. The film is beautifully played in so many ways, the humorous, sometimes painfully truthful dialogue, the subtlety and complete exploration of character development, and the raw human emotions. Most importantly, the few sex scenes are not so much exploitative as revealing of character and relationships. Hey, you may even find Terence Stamp's character's sex tips useful, if you're into tantric sex and such. You never know.
